The Iconic SCGC FTC Model

Santa Cruz's groundbreaking FTC model first arrived at the tail end of the 1970s going into the '80s, with a distinctive style and voice in merging the violin-like arched back with a traditional flat spruce top. After a limited run the model was discontinued, but in that short period of time found its way, notably, into the hands of the one and only Eric Clapton, who used the guitar extensively on tour and at home, favouring it for its remarkable projection and sustain.

Upon restoring Eric's original guitar in 2015, Richard Hoover and the team at Santa Cruz rekindled their love for this unique and versatile steel-string and after another limited run for their 40th Anniversary, were extremely excited to put this storied model back into production, as were we and quite rightly so!

We had the pleasure last year of taking in a wonderful example of this iconic instrument and it absolutely blew us away. The sheer output level of the guitar, in tandem with the balance and warmth in that considerable volume is something to behold, as both player and listener. From the players perspective the best of these hugely dynamic tones is readily available from the smooth and comfortable playability, with a lively and crisp tone suited to a range of styles.

We currently have a gorgeous pair of FTCs in our showroom, one of which was brought back from the Winter NAMM Show earlier this year and another a jaw-dropping pre-owned model with a deep sunburst finish. Both are stunning examples of the fine work of Richard Hoover and his team, and we couldn't be happier to have them on our walls!

This is a truly special instrument. First seen in the Santa Cruz Guitar Company Booth at the Winter NAMM Show earlier this year and exhibiting a real masterclass in workmanship and quality, this gorgeous showpiece stole our hearts there and then, so we simply had to bring it back to share!

Built in a sensational set of Flamed European Maple for the back and sides paired with a European Spruce top and all unified with a full-body, peachy sunburst that looks almost good enough to eat, the FTC combines a graceful, arched back with flat top construction that culminates in an explosive, unique and inspiring tonality.

This signature construction is the heart of the distinctive FTC sound, bringing the projection and power of an Archtop guitar coupled with the warmth and sustain of a traditional flat top. The guitar has an impressive dynamic response, with character and depth under a soft attack all the way through to rich detail and punchy mids when played with a flatpick at the upper end of the instrument's wealth of headroom.

As we always adore from Santa Cruz, the playability of the guitar is truly sublime with an effortless feel under the left hand and fantastic access to the upper frets thanks to both the thoughtful and elegant cutaway as well as the comfortable carve of the neck itself.

We are truly blown away by this beautiful instrument, a real show of the exceptional work of Richard Hoover and his team.

Santa Cruz FTC Electro-Acoustic Guitar, Flamed Maple & European Spruce - Pre-Owned - Pre-Owned - £9,995

This absolutely astounding art-deco behemoth from Santa Cruz Guitars out in Santa Cruz, California is an FTC Model Acoustic Guitar in Flamed Maple and European Spruce.

Born from a desire to create a flat top acoustic with the projection of an archtop guitar without lacking sustain, this majestic instrument is made with a beautifully carved Flamed Maple back and sides, then coupled with a European spruce top for warmth and clarity.

The neck is also comprised of Flamed Maple in its bulk, with an Ebony fretboard topping it and bringing the whole sonic identity of the guitar together. The 'round' neck profile is incredibly comfortable and across the board the guitar boasts superb playability and highly responsive dynamics.

In regards to the tone of this very unique instrument, the low end is powerful and rich, with very present and punchy mids and the lovely sparkle in the high end frequencies you would hope from from high grade maple. This all comes together with a fantastic abundance of projection and harmonic complexity that makes this guitar really bellow and sing when played with a flatpick, while also remaining deep and clear when played fingerstyle, with those telltale harmonics still lingering.

The guitar comes with a Santa Cruz fitted hardcase.
